Derek Carlson began his tenure with the RWU Baseball team in 2002. During his 12 seasons with the Hawks, his teams have posted an overall record of 261-267-1 and have gone 131-100 in CCC play. In addition, Carlson is a four-time Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year, receiving the honor in 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2014.

This past season, the Hawks finished fifth in the CCC and made its second consecutive run to the CCC Championship Game, upsetting the top three seeds in the tournament. A year earlier, the Hawks secured a second-place finish in the CCC with a 12-4 record and finished within one game of the CCC Championship Game. The team would go on to earn the #1 seed in the ECAC Tournament and wrap-up the year as ECAC Division III New England Runners-Up while winning 26 games, second-most in program history. Under Carlson’s guidance, pitchers Tyler Pogmore and George Lund were named d3baseball.com All-Americans, the first All-Americans in RWU Baseball history.

In 2013, Carlson coached the Hawks to a 24-18 overall record, going 10-6 in conference play and earning the #4 seed in the CCC Tournament. Accolades included six players being named to the All-CCC team and earning the CCC Sportsmanship Award. Relief pitcher Tyler Pogmore, was named to the NEIBA All-New England 1st Team and was also signed to the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide. Joining Pogmore in summer leagues are pitcher A.J. Bashaw to the Brockton Rox and catcher Chris Travers to the New Bedford Bay Sox, who was named to the NECBL All-Star game.

During the 2012 season, Carlson and the Hawks reached the CCC Tournament with a doubleheader sweep on the final day of the season to earn the #4 seed. From there, the Hawks would pick up wins against the #2 and #3 seeds to advance to the CCC Championship Game for the first time since 2006.

In 2008, the Hawks posted 34 wins, the highest total in a season in school history. In 2009, the Hawks were one game short of the CCC Championships, but were able to produce several notable achievements. Brian Hurld was named NEIBA All-New England 3rd Team, and Zach Porter earned a 10-day contract playing for the New Bedford Bay Sox. One player was named CCC All-Conference First Team, one to Second Team, and two players earned Honorable Mention.

Carlson came to the University from Wheaton College where he served as the assistant baseball coach for six seasons. He was the team’s recruiting coordinator and was responsible for the coaching and development of the hitters and catchers. During his tenure the Lyons made the NCAA Tournament three times and had five All-Americans.

He has also served as head coach of the New England Mariners AAU baseball club in Danvers, Massachusetts. He guided the 16-and-under team to a seventh-place finish in the AAU National Championships in 1998.

From 1991-1996 he was an assistant coach at Brandeis University. He has served as an instructor at the Mo Vaughn Baseball Camp, the Four Seasons baseball camp and the Pete Varney baseball camp.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1991 from Brandeis University. He served as captain of the Judges in his senior season and was a three-time University Athletic Association All-Star selection and a two-time Greater Boston League All-Star. After his junior year, he was invited to play for the Harwich Mariners in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.
