Steve Diemoz returns for his fifth season as the Head Coach of the reinstated varsity Men’s Golf team.

In their first season reinstated as a varsity sport, Diemoz’s team demonstrated strong growth in the Hawks’ first year back. In their first tournament, the team placed 6th at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Qualifier, missing the spring championship by only 20 strokes. At the University of New England Invitational, the Hawks placed fifth, showing signs of progress in the early part of the year.

In 2016, the team earned a berth to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship after tying for second at the CCC Fall Golf Qualifier. At the CCC Championship, the Hawks finished fourth overall in their first appearance since being reinstated as a varsity program. In addition, Joshua Unkrich was selected to the All-CCC team, Roger Williams first all-conference golfer since the program was reinstated.

This past year, the team also hosted its first invitational since being reinstated, welcoming seven teams to Montaup Country Club and placing fourth and fifth at the tournament. Though the Hawks were unable to earn a berth to the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship after finishing sixth at the CCC Qualifier, the team still enjoyed a spring with competition at three invitationals.

Diemoz brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program. He was the head coach of the Hawks from 2000 to 2004 when the program was still a varsity sport. During his five seasons, he coached the team to the 2002 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship and guided the Hawks to two runner-up finishes at the CCC Championship. He holds a 52-33-1 record as coach of the Hawks with a winning percentage of .610, the best in school history.

He has over 30 years of experience as golf professional, including the past 26 years as a golf pro at Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He has provided hundreds of lessons and clinics on an annual basis and has coached numerous players at the high school level.

As a player, Diemoz has qualified for the PGA Professional National Championship in 2011 and Senior Professional National Championship in 2011 and 2012. In addition, he was the 2009 Rhode Island Golf Professional of the Year and placed second at the New England PGA Senior Championship.
