Ted Torrey returns for his fourth season as Head Coach of the Roger Williams Women’s Polo program.
In 2018, Torrey coached the Women’s Polo program in its inaugural season. The team collected its first-ever win on October 24, a 14-6 win over Brown. The team qualified for US Polo Association Northeast Regionals, where the team finished in third place.
Torrey also coached the Roger Williams University Men’s Polo program for five seasons. In the inaugural year of the Men’s Polo program, Torrey helped the Hawks collect its first win in program history with a 22-12 victory over the University of Connecticut. In the spring, the Hawks competed in the United States Polo Association Northeast Regionals for a chance to take part in the USPA National Championship, advancing to the national semifinals. Then in its second season as a varsity program, Torrey quickly established Roger Williams as the premier program in the country. The team wrapped up a stellar fall season, going undefeated in their five matches. The Hawks opened the spring with a pair of wins in the USPA New England Intercollegiate Regionals to advance to the National Championship. The Hawks took down Cornell to advance to the national championship against Southern Methodist University, where Torrey guided the team to the USPA National Intercollegiate Championship in a thrilling shootout win over the Mustangs to win the national title.
Prior to his duties with the RWU Polo program, Torrey also served as Head Coach of the Roger Williams University Equestrian team for five years from 2011-16. During the 2015-16 season, Torrey guided five riders on the Equestrian team to the Region One show, with Lauren Loshiavo finished third in the region in Open Fences. In 2014, the Equestrian team rode to a stellar performance throughout the season, closing out the year as Reserve Champions of Region 1 for the second straight season. On the season, Torrey helped guide eight riders to compete at Regionals, including Maddie Stein, who ended her year as the Reserve Champion for the Cacchione Cup as the top Open Rider in the region.
In his first year as coach, Torrey helped the Hawks conclude the season with one of their best showings of recent years, finishing third overall in the region. As a team, the Hawks finished third or better in eight of their nine shows throughout the year, receiving the Reserve High Point Ribbon three times on the year as show runners-up and winning the final show of the year. At the end of the regular season, Chelsea Francis represented the Hawks at the Zone 1 Finals after the Hawks sent ten riders to Regionals. Lyndsey Burns had the most accomplished year for the Hawks, winning the Cacchione Cup as the top Open Rider in the region and represented RWU at the IHSA National Championships, where she earned Honorable Mention honors. Torrey’s sophomore effort proved to be better than his first year. He helped guide the Equestrian team finish the season as Reserve Champions in the region.
