Dirk Johnson Jr. brings extensive collegiate, dinghy, team racing and offshore sailing experience to Roger Williams University.

Johnson sailed collegiately at Roger Williams University from 2014-15 before competing for the College of Charleston Sailing Team from 2015-19. During his collegiate career, he competed at the highest levels of college sailing, including two second-place finishes at the Hinman Team Racing Championship in 2015 and 2017.

Johnson began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s varsity dinghy team in 2019. During the 2020 season, Coast Guard posted a 75-percent win percentage. He later served as an assistant coach with the Dartmouth College Dinghy Sailing Team from 2020-22.

In addition to his collegiate sailing and coaching experience, Johnson has competed extensively in offshore, fleet and team racing, including the Rolex Transatlantic Race, Rolex Fastnet Race, Bermuda Race and Annapolis-to-Newport Race. His racing résumé includes first-place finishes at the J/70 New Englands, J/70 Pacific Coast Championships, Shelter Island Race Week and multiple Newport and New York Yacht Club events.

Johnson also brings experience as a boat captain, bowman and private sailing coach, along with developing an 80-page team-racing curriculum for high school sailors.
