BRISTOL, R.I.- Roger Williams University junior Jared Czarneski (Shelton, Conn.) was named RWU Male Athlete of the Week Monday after his strong performance at the New England Wrestling Association Championships this weekend. This marks his second such award this season, also earning the honor Jan. 7.
Czarneski earns the RWU award one day after receiving a selection into the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships. Each winner of his respective weight class in the NEWA Championships receives an automatic bid to the national championship; Czarneski placed second and was awarded one of four New England wild card selections.
After defeating his first three opponents during Saturday’s action by a combined score of 32-4, Czarneski met top-seed Jerome Owens (Mitchellville, Md.) from No. 13 Johnson & Wales. The ensuing contest was tight throughout with Owens taking the 7-5 decision in the end.
Czarneski continued in the double-elimination tournament, defeating Rhode Island College senior Brendan Casey (Lowell, Mass.), 6-1, to advance to the finals and face Owens for the second time on the day. An upset was not in the making however, as another tight match ended in favor of Owens, this time by the score of 6-4.
His 4-2 record on the weekend and his strong performance throughout the season helped him reach the national championships, to be held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, March 7-8.
