Women's Soccer downed in NCAA Second Round

ITHACA, N.Y. –  The run for an NCAA Championship ended Sunday afternoon, as the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team fell 2-0 to Ithaca College Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.

 

A strong offensive effort by Ithaca helped keep the pressure on the Hawks throughout the day, outshooting RWU by a 28-9 margin. In addition, the Bombers held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

 

Ithaca's Chelsey Feldman notched the first goal of the game in the 27th minute, heading in a cross from Amy Scheffer into the far post to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first that the Hawks had allowed in the NCAA postseason.

 

The one-goal lead held up until the 78th minute, when Scheffer connected to Feldman again for her second score of the game.

 

Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) remained busy throughout the day, making six saves in the game. Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) had five shots for the Hawks, including two stopped by the Bomber goalie Alyssa Sotomayor. Sotomayor needed three saves to record the shutout.

 

Roger Williams finishes the season with a record of 19-3-0, while Ithaca (16-2-2) advances to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
