Women's Hoops falls in non-conference game with Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - Three Seahawks scored in double figures led by freshman center Lindsay Shorey's (Ashland, Mass.) 19 points as Salve Regina University defeated Roger Williams University, 65-49, in a non-league meeting in Newport.

Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) came off the bench to hit a jumper for Roger Williams (2-2) that forged the game's fourth tie (14-14) before Salve Regina (3-2) finished the first half on a 26-4 run. Shorey had 14 points at the break and sophomore guard Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half as Salve Regina went into the break up 40-18.

“I thought we played great defense for most of the game,” said Seahawk head coach Cori Hughes. “(Roger Williams senior forward) Casey Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) was averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds coming into tonight, and she left with 13 points and 7 rebounds; that's a credit not only to Lindsay Shorey –who has been an amazing asset to this team - but also to Vicky Audet (Broad Brook, Conn.), Olivia Browning (Trumbull, Conn.), and our TEAM defense that did a great job helping.”

Hughes continued: “Erin Phillips continues to grow as a player and impress; she once again did an excellent job going to the basket and hitting the boards (nine rebounds).”

Senior captain Allegra Lovoy (Charlestown, R.I.) was credited with handling the pressure, running the show, hitting tough shots, diving on the floor, playing excellent defense. She finished with 14 points, eight assists, five steals, and four rebounds.

“This was a big win for us. We need to build on this and come ready for an excellent Bowdoin team on Sunday.”

Salve Regina travels to Brunswick, Maine for a 3 p.m. meeting with the Polar Bears on Sunday while Roger Williams hosts Wheaton College for its next game on Dec. 2 (7 p.m.). The Hawks and Seahawks meet again in February for their annual The Commonwealth Coast Conference match-up.
