Lyons down Women’s Basketball

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. A strong first-half helped Wheaton College earn a 75-66 victory over the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team Tuesday evening.

The duo of Jenny Champney (Bedford, Mass.) and Andrea Bailey (Needham, Mass.) played a large role in the Lyon victory, as Champney finished with a game-high 22 points while Bailey notched a double-double with 18 points and ten assists.

After the Hawks scored first on a layup by Casey Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.), Wheaton jumped out a 10-0 run, taking an eight-point lead. Despite shooting a season-high 53.8% from the field (28-52) including going 16-for-27 in the second half, RWU could not overcome the nine-point deficit at the half. Wheaton took a 38-29 advantage into the break.

RWU opened the second half on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to four. However, that would be as close as the Hawks would get, as the Lyons responded with a 9-2 run to make it a 49-38 game at the 15:06 mark.

Wheaton never allowed Roger Williams to pull closer than seven in the second half. With the Lyons leading 72-59, RWU made a late push when Jennifer Youngquist (Sandwich, Mass.) knocked down a three to pull the Hawks within nine with just under two minutes to play. Wheaton ended the rally with a pair of defensive stops, as Stephanie Michals (Fairfax, Va.) made a steal with 1:12 to play. On the following Hawk possession, the Lyons forced an offensive foul to regain possession of the ball and maintain its nine-point lead with under a minute to play.

Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) had the hot hand for RWU, dropping 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting, while Youngquist added 11 points and Anderson scoring ten with seven boards.

Roger Williams (2-3) will host Eastern Connecticut State University Thursday at 7:00 p.m., while Wheaton (4-2) hosts Brandeis Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
