BEVERLY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Softball team fell under .500 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, as the Hawks fell to Endicott College Tuesday afternoon by a pair of 6-1 scores.
In the first game, neither team scored in the opening two innings until Casey Shanely (Billerica, Mass.) took advantage of a two-out wild pitch with the bases loaded to give the Gulls a 1-0 lead. Shanely then singled in Dani Hill (Fryeburg, Maine) in the following for one of Endicott's two runs in the frame.
The Hawks were able to get back one of those runs in the top of the fifth, when Christine Bean (Southhampton, Mass.) plated Callie Nealon (Hopkinton, Mass.) with an RBI single. The Gulls answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, putting them up by five.
Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) was charged with all six runs in the loss, going 4.2 innings, while her counterpart, Maria Mangine (Lockport, N.Y.), went the distance, improving to 5-0. Bean, Nealon, and Jen Lyford (Raynham, Mass.) each got a hit in the game for Roger Williams.
Endicott jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second game when Rachel Pearson (Gales Ferry, Conn.) and Mangine led off the second inning with back-to-back home runs. The scoring continued for the Gulls, as they added a run in each of the third and sixth innings and two in the fourth.
The Hawks' lone run came in the top of the seventh, when LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.) doubled in Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.). By that point, RWU trailed by five and could not mount a rally to come back in the game.
Stephanie Collins (Burlington, Mass.) pitched all six innings in the game, giving up six runs. Jenn Elwell earned her fourth win of the year, spreading out nine hits over seven innings. Caprice had three of those hits in the game for the Hawks.
Roger Williams (7-11, 2-4 TCCC) goes on the road Friday to play Wellesley College at 3:30 p.m., while Endicott (11-2, 4-0 TCCC) will host Regis College Friday for a noon conference doubleheader.
