Softball rolls past Leopards

BOSTON, Mass. – Scoring 39 runs on 14 hits and drawing 27 walks, the Roger Williams softball team swept Wentworth, 15-1, and 24-0, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader played at Carr Diamond.

The opening game saw the Hawks jump out to a 3-0 lead after two innings before opening the game up with six runs—coming by way of one hit, six walks, and a pair of hit batsmen—in the third inning, while sending 12 batters to the plate. Junior Christine Bean (Southampton, Mass.) drew a walk to load the bases and classmate Renee Bilotti (Bristol, R.I.) brought in a run on the second of three consecutive walks.

Wentworth scored its lone run in the bottom of the inning, coming when junior Krista Kelley (Medford, Mass.) stole home on a delayed steal that saw classmate Christina Morris (Eatontown, N.J.) thrown out attempting to steal second.

Roger Williams added three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth, with senior LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.) and senior Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.) each having a hit in each of those two innings.

Sophomore Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) picked up the win to improve to 4-8 on the season. She allowed one run on five hits, while walking one and striking out six. Offensively Lewis was 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Gregory, and freshman Sarah Grill (Waterlivet, N.Y.) had two hits. Senior Ashley Glassick (Newport, R.I.) was 2-for-2 for Wentworth.

Gregory hurled a no-hitter in the second game and was provided all of the offense she needed in the first inning when the Hawks sent 19 batters to the plate, scoring 13 times. Again, they used walks to their advantage, as 10 of the 19 batters who came to the plate would reach via a free pass. She would help her own cause with a three-run home run to right field in the second inning, while Lewis would deliver a three-run shot in the third.

In her no-hitter, Gregory walked two and struck out eight, while setting down the final seven and nine of the last 10 batters she faced. Offensively she was 1-for-1 with four runs scored and four RBI, while walking four times. Lewis was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and six RBI.
