BEVERLY, Mass. – Roger Williams University did what no other school has been able to do this spring, and that is defeat Endicott in TCCC play and also down the Gulls on their home field. The Hawks walked away with a pair of conference victories on Sunday, downing the Gulls, 6-2, in game one, and then edged the Blue and Green, 5-4, in game two. The two wins improve Roger Williams to 19-8 overall and 11-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. Endicott slips to 14-8 overall and 8-2 in TCCC play.
An RBI double by Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) quickly game RWU at 1-0 lead in game one. Endicott responded with two runs in the home-half of the second, as the Blue and Green struck first with a successful double-steal, and then the second run coming on a bases loaded walk.
The visitors were able to get the run back as Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.) hit a towering solo shot to right center to tie the game at 2-all. The Hawks pulled away in the latter part of the contest as Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) grounded an RBI single through the left side to score the go-ahead run. The Hawks tacked-on three more in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach, 6-2.
Roger Williams was once again quick out of the gate to start game two, jumping ahead, 3-0, in the top of the first. A hit batter and three wild pitches led to two quick runs. The Hawks' third run of the frame once again came on the long-ball, as Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.) took Tyler Connelly (Grafton, Mass.) deep over the fence for the three run advantage.
The Gulls battled their way back into the game in the bottom of the fourth, lacing four hits en route to a four run rally. Tom Warner (Contoocook, N.H.) led the frame off with a double to left field, followed by an RBI double by Aaron Santos (Boston, Mass.). Mike Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) then plated Santos as he poked an RBI single to left, cutting the lead to one. Freshman Luis Uribe (Boston, Mass.) raked a double to left to score Barbati to even the game. Uribe would eventually give the Gulls the lead as he worked his way around the base paths, scoring on a wild pitch.
A fielding error and two wild pitches allowed the Hawks to regain the lead in the fifth. Aaron Santos misplayed a ball hit to centerfield, allowing both runs to cross the plate.
Entering the bottom of the seventh down one, Endicott had no answer to Roger Williams' closer Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.). The hard throwing righty came on to record his fifth save of the season, retiring the Gulls in order to preserve the 5-4 win.
