BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team clinched the regular season Commonwealth Coast Conference title with 7-4 and 4-2 wins over in-state TCCC rival Salve Regina University Wednesday afternoon.
Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) started things off for the Hawks with an RBI single in the first inning, scoring
Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) for the first run of the game. The Seahawks tied up the game two innings later when Matt Finlayson (Higganum, Conn.) touched home off of Riley Diaz's (Miami, Fla.) RBI single.
The Hawks would regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as
Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) knocked in Simpson and
Jamie Dahill (S. Boston, Mass.) with a two-out, two RBI single. Salve Regina's Robert Peruzzotti (Mystic, Conn.) homered to left field in the fourth to pull the Seahawks within one, but RWU responded with three runs in the following at-bat to stretch the lead to four.
Trailing 7-2 entering the sixth, Salve Regina opened the inning with back-to-back doubles by Peruzzotti and Matt Leonard (Ridgefield, Conn.), with Peruzzotti scoring on the second two-bagger. Leonard would later score on a wild pitch to make it a 7-4 game, but that would be as close as the Seahawks got, as
Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.) came on in the seventh for his seventh save of the season.
James Lydon (Calverton, N.Y.) improved to 6-0, going five innings and giving up four runs (three earned) while striking out three. Andrew Spino (Lincoln, R.I.) dropped to 1-1, allowing six runs in 3.1 innings.
Matt Berte (Marlborough, Mass.) had a perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored, while
Ryan MacCarthy (Middleton, Mass.) had a hit, a walk, and a run scored. Salve Regina's Peruzzotti went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored, with teammate Adam Gingras (North Attleboro, Mass.) going 2-for-3 at the dish.
The second game began saw more of a pitcher's duel, as
Sam Podbelski (E. Greenwich, R.I.) and Charles Matarazzo (Montville, N.J.) kept their respective opponents scoreless over the opening three innings. Podbelski retired the first nine batters of the game, while Matarazzo scattered three hits in the first three Hawk at-bats.
Finlayson finally got to Podbelski in the fourth, leading off the inning with a single to left. After stealing second and getting to third on a groundout, Finlayson gave the Seahawks a one-run lead off of a Peruzzotti RBI single. The Hawks quickly erased the deficit, as Dahill led off with a walk, which Simpson followed up with a two-run homer to center. The next two Hawks followed the example of the previous two batters, as
Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.) walked, then came around to score on Porter's two-run home run to right center.
Salve Regina crept back into the game, pulling within two off of Diaz's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Greg Sousa (Billerica, Mass.) came on in relief and was able to get out of a jam, getting a pop-up to short with runners on first and second. In the seventh, the Seahawks looked poised for another potential rally, after getting the first runner on base via a hit-by-pitch, prompting Dunn out of the bullpen for his second appearance of the day. After throwing a wild pitch, he set down the next three in a row for his eighth save of the year.
Podbelski earned the win, striking out three and allowing two runs (one earned) in 5.2 innings, while Matarazzo picked up his first loss of the season, allowing all four runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Porter finished 2-for-3 with a two RBI off of the home run, with Simpson going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Finlayson and Steven Guntharp (Williamsburg, Va.) each had one hit and one run scored for the Seahawks.
Roger Williams (28-9, 20-2 TCCC) will take on Brandeis University tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference matchup, while Salve Regina ends the regular season with a 21-17-1 overall record and an 11-10-1 record in the TCCC.
