Andrea Gregory gets eighth win of the year

Softball splits with Seahawks

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team picked up a win in a TCCC doubleheader against Salve Regina University, dropping the first game 2-1 and winning the second 5-3.
 
RWU's Alexandra Sera (Newton, Mass.) and Sarah Jakiela (Meriden, Conn.) were locked in a battle in the first game, as neither pitcher allowed a run over the first four innings. Salve Regina got on the board first when Gabriella Vitale (Danvers, Mass.) scored on an RBI single by Emily Rodenhiser (Danvers, Mass.).

The Hawks' scoreless stretch ended in the sixth off of an RBI single by Samantha Teves (Somerset, Mass.). After Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.) crossed the plate, the Hawks found themselves tied at one.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Caitlin Poplawski (New Britain, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, putting the winning run on base. After a sacrifice, single, and strike out, the Hawks were faced with runners at second and third with two outs. Lauryn Dahrooge (Charlton, Mass.) gave the Seahawks the win with an RBI single to score Poplawski.
 
Sera took the tough loss, giving up both runs in 6.2 innings, while Jakiela notched her 16 win of the year, allowing a run and striking out eight.
 
Teves, Michelle Caprice (Oak Ridge, N.J.), LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.), and Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook, Conn.) each had a hit in the game. Rodenhiser picked up went 3-for-4 in the game while Dahrooge had two hits for Salve Regina.
 
The second game saw RWU scored two early runs in the second and third by Burke and Lewis, respectively. Salve Regina tied it in the bottom of the third off of Alison Hanson's (East Hampton, N.Y.) two-RBI single. The Hawks regained the lead in the fourth as Teves scored on an error by the pitcher, but relinquished it in the fifth when Hanson doubled in Poplawski.
 
Gregory put RWU up for good in the sixth inning, singling in Jen Lyford (Raynham, Mass.) and Christine Bean (Southampton, Mass.). The Seahawks were held scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing the Hawks to salvage the split.
 
Gregory got her eighth win of the year, allowing three runs in seven innings, while Jakiela took the loss, surrendering all five runs (two earned). Gregory and Sarah Grill (Watervliet, N.Y.) each had three hits for RWU, while Hanson and Poplawski combined for five hits and three RBI for Salve Regina.
 
Roger Williams (17-19, 11-9 TCCC) will host Gordon College Friday at 4:00 p.m., while Salve Regina (16-18, 13-7 TCCC) hosts Endicott College at 4:00 p.m.
