MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Softball team got back on the winning track with a split in Sunday afternoon's TCCC matchup against Curry College, dropping the first game 6-4 and winning the second 3-0.
Curry grabbed an early 2-0 lead off of a two-run homerun by Kristen Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) in the bottom of the first. The Colonels would add two more runs in the third, as Lauren Tobey (Lynn, Mass.) doubled in Jackman and Ashley Corkum (Windham, Maine) to give them a 4-0 advantage.
Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.) scored in the fourth for the Hawks, and
Jen Lyford (Raynham, Mass.) crossed the plate on a
LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md.) RBI single in the fifth. However, the Colonels matched each of those runs in the bottom half of the respective innings, putting RWU in a 6-2 hole.
The Hawks were able to get two more runs in the top of the seventh, but could not complete the comeback, as Curry's Katie O'Neill (Braintree, Mass.) gained her sixth win of the year.
In the second game, Gregory salvaged a split for the Hawks by tossing a three-hit shutout. She allowed four walks and struck out four in the game, snapping a five-game losing streak for the Hawks.
Gregory also helped her cause with an RBI single in the top of the fourth, sending in Lewis, and later coming around to score in the inning.
Christine Bean (Southampton, Mass.) added the third run of the day in the seventh, taking advantage of a wild pitch.
Roger Williams (8-12, 3-5 TCCC) will host the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth this evening in a 5:00 p.m. game, while Curry (11-8, 5-3 TCCC) will take on Salem State College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
