BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team defeated Gordon College 11-0 Friday afternoon to advance as one of the final four teams remaining in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.
Both teams were held scoreless over the opening inning, until the Hawks came in with two runs in the second by
Tony Verrochi (Norwood, Mass.) and
Matt Berte (Marlborough, Mass.). RWU added one more run in the third when
Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) scored on an infield single to short by
Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.).
Those three runs would be all
Brian Hurld (South Boston, Mass.) needed as the southpaw tossed a complete game shutout, scattering only five hits over nine innings while striking out a season-high nine batters.
The Hawk offense continued with four runs in the fourth, three of which came from a homer by Bolin.
Andrew Haycock (Medfield, Mass.) also came through with a home run of his own in the seventh. Haycock came on as a pinch-hitter with
Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.) on second and lifted the first pitch he saw over the right field fence. His shot made it a 10-0 game, as the Hawks added one more in the eighth towards the win.
Stephen Kefelas (Wenham, Mass.) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) and six hits in three innings of work. Offensively for the Fighting Scots, Aaron Whittet (Rye, N.H.) was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
Dahill went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in his first time in the leadoff spot this season, while Berte also collected three hits and two runs in the game.
Roger Williams (31-11) will face Wentworth Institute of Technology tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. for a berth to the TCCC Championship game. Gordon finishes the season with a record of 12-22 overall and 8-14 in the conference.
