Women’s Hoops wins first TCCC game on last-second basket

BOSTON, Mass. The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team earned its first TCCC win of the season in thrilling fashion, as Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) scored the game-winning layup with six seconds left to push RWU over Wentworth Institute of Technology 65-63 Saturday afternoon.

Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the game, evidenced by five ties and 15 lead changes. The Hawks held a 12-3 lead early in the game before the Leopards came back. Entering the second half, RWU led Wentworth by a slim 34-33 margin.

In the second frame, Michelle Moffo led off the half with a layup to put the Leopards back on top by a point. The advantage would stretch to as wide as eight over the course of the half, in which Wentworth controlled the lead throughout most of the period.

The Hawks eventually made the comeback, as Congdon sank a free throw with just under two minutes to play to knot the game at 60 apiece. On the following possession, Margo Ward knocked down a jumper to put the Leopards back up by two. Congdon responded on the other end with a three-point play, sinking a jump shot of her own to tie the game and nailing the free throw for RWU's first lead since the beginning of the half.

With 36 seconds to play and trailing by one, Moffo tied the game back up at 63, after hitting the back end of a pair of free throws. On the ensuing Hawk possession, Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) went into the paint for a layup with eight seconds remaining. Although Criss could not get the shot to fall, Congdon came up with her eighth offensive rebound of the game and laid up the put back for the go-ahead bucket with six seconds left.

Wentworth called timeout and had one final opportunity to send the game into overtime, but Michelle Gardner's jumper couldn't find the bottom of the net as RWU escaped with the win.

Congdon finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, all offensive, while scoring the final six points for RWU. Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) picked up her second straight double-double with 18 points and 14 boards. Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) scored a season-high 15, while Criss added seven points, five boards, and five assists.

Wentworth's Jessie Coffey led all scorers with 23 points, while Gardner added 18. Moffo grabbed ten rebounds to go along with her three points.

Roger Williams (3-11, 1-2 TCCC) heads up to Gordon College Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. game, while Wentworth (4-10, 2-1 TCCC) travels Monday to Colby College for a 5:30 p.m. game.
