WENHAM, Mass. – The Roger Williams University improved to .500 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 60-56 victory over Gordon College Wednesday evening.
After playing perhaps their best half of the season, the Scots fell just short in the second half. Down 57-56 in the final 25 seconds, the Scots committed two costly turnovers and were unable to overcome the deficit.
Gordon came out flying early on running out to a 10-2 lead sparked by Heather DeKleine's outside shooting and the inside play of Rebecca Carroll. Rebecca Carroll had 18 points and 11 boards for the Scots for her second consecutive double-double. Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.), who finished with ten points, nine assists, helped pull the visiting Hawks back into the game, but Carroll and DeKleine went on another run late in the second half to put Gordon up 30-22 at the break.
In the second half, Heather Babin (Danvers, Mass.) of Roger Williams (14 points, 16 rebounds) began to take control underneath, and along with the creative play of Criss, helped the Hawks take control of the contest. However, two clutch 3-pointers by Kim Levinsky helped keep the Scots close and gave them a chance to win at the end. Gordon appeared to be setting up another long jump shot by Levinsky in the waning seconds, but the play was broken up with 11 seconds remaining by Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.).
Bridget O'Hara had a team high 5 assists for Gordon to go along with 7 points. DeKleine finished with 9 points including 2, 3-pointers and Sara Schwanke chipped in with 8.
Gordon (3-13, 2-2, TCCC) will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to play Curry College at 1pm. Roger Williams (4-11, 2-2, TCCC) will host New England College at 1pm on Saturday.
