Women’s Hoops upended by local rival RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –  The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team continues to seek to snap its skid after falling 39-71 Thursday evening to Rhode Island College.

Turnovers and shooting difficulties gave the Hawks issues in the game. Rhode Island College scored 26 points off of 37 Hawk turnovers, while RWU shot only 20.3% from the field (12-57).

A 9-0 run by the Anchorwomen put the Hawks in an early hole before Carly Spagnola (Millbrook, N.Y.) put RWU on the board with a jumper. She would follow up with a pair of free throws to bring the Hawks within five, but eight straight points by RIC widened the margin. By halftime, the Anchorwomen built at 40-13 lead.

In the second half, the Hawks field goal percentage picked up, including going 5-of-13 from three-point range. However, RWU was unable to make a significant dent into the 27-point deficit.

Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) had four points and a game-high 11 rebounds in her first start of the season. Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) led the Hawks with ten points including three treys.

Stephanie Coro led all scorers with 21 points for the Anchorwomen, while teammate Tyla Martin scored 15 off the bench.

Roger Williams (2-9) travels up to Nichols College Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the 2008-09 Commonwealth Coast Conference opener.
