BRISTOL, R.I. – Two goals by Justin Plourde (Concord, N.H.) gave the Roger Williams Men's Soccer team a 2-0 win against Endicott College in Saturday's Commonwealth Coast Conference game.
At 4:59, Plourde took a free kick which no players on either side were able to get a touch. The ball eventually bounced through everyone and into the right side of the goal to give RWU a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Brendan O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) kicked one of Roger Williams' six corner kicks which Plourde headed into the goal as the clock read 74:58. Plourde nearly finished the game with a hat trick, but goalie Daniel Higgins (Kingstown, R.I.) made a diving save to his right at the 52nd minute.
Both the Hawks and the Gulls attempted three shots on goal, all of which Hawk Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) saved, while Higgins shielded the one from entering. Roger Williams had the advantage in shots, 11-8, and corner kicks 6-4.
Aggressiveness defined the play of both teams throughout the game, with 25 fouls committed between the Hawks and Gulls, with three players receiving cautions on both sides.
Roger Williams (11-3-0, 7-1-0 TCCC) and Endicott (5-7-0, 4-4-0 TCCC) will continue in another Commonwealth Coast Conference game Wednesday October 14. The Hawks will compete against Gordon College on home ground at 3:00 p.m. and Endicott will play Eastern Nazarene at 7:00 p.m. in Beverly, Massachusetts.
