Two Second Half Goals Propel Men’s Soccer to Win on Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team got off to a slow start on Saturday but scored three unanswered goals to get the victory over visiting Curry College by a score of 3-1.  The Hawks and the Colonels were even at the half 1-1, but RWU was able to notch two goals in the second half to get the win.

Prior to the game the Hawks honored the two seniors who are graduating this season, Chris Guerrini (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Justin Plourde (Concord, N.H.) as well as Assistant Coach Caitlin Mayo who will be graduating in December.  The Hawks also held a moment of silence and lowered the flag to half-mast in honor of RWU Alumnus and U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant Joseph Fortin who was killed in action while serving in Iraq this past summer.

The first goal of the game was a shot that was actually going wide by Devin Sadlers (Somerset, Mass.) but a Hawks defender came in trying to clear the ball and ended up putting it into the back of his own goal at the 14 minute mark.  The second goal of the half was scored by Michael Friedman (Scarsdale, N.Y.) on a shot from the right side that was set up by Brendan O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) in the final minute of the first half.

In the second half the Hawks offense got going and were able to tally one in the 64th minute as Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) headed in a ball off a free kick from Plourde.  RWU then got an insurance goal from O'Brien who had a chip shot that was set up by Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) and Josh Boyce (Peabody, Mass.).

The Hawks recorded 17 shots during the game compared to Curry's nine.  In net Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) got the win recording two saves while Brian Newsome (Lawrenceville, N.J.) took the loss for the Colonels.

The Hawks improve to 13-5-0 overall and 9-3-0 in the TCCC while Curry drops to 9-7-1 and 7-5-0 in the TCCC.  The next game for the Colonels is Tuesday as they will travel to Wentworth, and the Hawks will be on the road as well as they travel to the University of New England in Henniker, N.H. for a 3:30 p.m. game.
