Volleyball sweeps Wentworth in conference matchup

BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team returned to Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 3-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Wednesday evening.

 

The Hawks earned their tenth win in straight sets on the year in a match that took little more than an hour to complete. RWU jumped out to a 25-12 win in the first set, followed by a 25-11 victory. The third set ended 25-16 in favor of the Hawks to give them their 17th win of the season.

 

Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) finished with nine kills on 14 attempts without an error for an astonishing .643 hitting percentage. Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) also did not commit an error on the night, getting eight kills on 16 swings for an even .500 percentage. In addition to her eight kills, she blocked five balls in the match.

 

Caryn Lecca (Ludlow, Mass.) tossed up 21 assists in two games, followed by Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) with 14 assists in one game played. On the defensive side, Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) dug out 12 balls for RWU.

 

The Hawk offense was stellar on the evening, tallying 43 kills in the match against only 12 errors in 91 attempts.

 

 “We did a great job tonight of playing smart and avoiding unnecessary errors,” Head Coach Bret Stothart said. “We did some nice things when we were out of system, so we were able to transition well, which allowed us to have a quality offensive attack.”

 

Roger Williams (17-10, 7-2 TCCC) will host Eastern Nazarene College Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the team's regular season finale. Wentworth (4-22, 2-6 TCCC) hosts a tri-match with Regis College and Western New England College Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
