#14 Brandeis rolls to win over Women’s Basketball

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.The #14-ranked Judges of Brandeis University snapped the two-game winning streak of the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team Saturday afternoon, defeating the Hawks 66-31.

Coming off a season-high 85 points in the team's previous game against Johnson & Wales, Roger Williams suffered its worst offensive output of the year against the Judges in the game, being held to season-lows in points (31) and field goal percentage (.188).

The game remained scoreless over the opening two minutes before Jessica Chapin (Mendon, N.Y.) staked the Judges out to an early 3-0 lead with a trey to spark a 7-0 run. Though Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) hit a pair of free throws at the 14:58 mark for the first points of the game for the Hawks, RWU was held without a field goal over the first 11 minutes of the game until a three-pointer by Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) made it a 5-17 game for Roger Williams with 8:45 to play in the period.

Her trey started a 6-0 run for the Hawks to cut the deficit to nine, but Chapin's fast-break layup not only put Brandeis back up by 11, but also gave the senior guard 1,000 points in her career, making her the eighth player in Brandeis Women's Basketball history to achieve the milestone. Her milestone basket helped the Judges maintain its double-digit lead throughout the rest of the half, going into the break with a 29-17 advantage.

The second half begin similarly to the first for Roger Williams, as the Hawks went scoreless in the first 5:40 of the period, as a layup by Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) ended an 11-0 run by the Judges to begin the second half. Leading 40-19 at that point, Brandeis would not allow the Hawks to pull within 22 over the remainder of the game as the Judges cruised to the win.

Chapin finished the game a game-high 15 points to give her 1,006 for her career to go along with five assists and four steals. Brighid Courtney (Southampton, Mass.) scored two but grabbed 13 boards and blocked two shots for Brandeis.

Lanieri scored seven points with 12 rebounds for Roger Williams, with teammate Kilzi adding nine points. Nicole Atchue (North Grafton, Mass.) added six points and five boards.

Roger Williams (3-5) will host Connecticut College Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Hawks' final game of the semester, while Brandeis (6-2) takes on Regis College on New Year's Eve at 1:00 p.m.
