CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team finished with another split on the third day of its Arizona Spring Break trip Monday afternoon against William Patterson University, winning the first game 9-7 and dropping the second 5-11.
In the first game, the Hawks were down 4-0 after the first inning, but rallied for two runs in the second and five in the fourth. RWU never looked back from there to get the win.
Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) notched his first win of the second in six innings of work. Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.) picked up his second save of the trip, holding off the Pioneer offense in the seventh. Tony Verrochi (Norwood, Mass.) finished with a home run and three RBI in the game, while Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) added a two-run home run.
In the second game, the Pioneers struck early again, scoring six runs in the first inning. The Hawks came back to make it a 7-4 game after four, but could not come closer over the course of the game.
Sean Scanlon (Lebanon, Conn.) took the loss in his first start as a Hawk. Porter notched his second multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Matt Berte (Marlborough, Mass.) adding two hits and an RBI.
Roger Williams (2-3) will be off for the next two days, returning to action Thursday with a doubleheader against Keene State College.
