CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team concluded its Spring Break trip Saturday against the University of Southern Maine, with the Huskies taking both games of the doubleheader against the Hawks by scores of 12-7 and 6-10.
The Hawks began the game with a pair of runs off of an RBI groundout by Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) and an RBI double by Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the top of the first. Yet The Huskies answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own to take the lead.
RWU regained the lead in the top of the third, as Tony Verrochi (Norwood, Mass.), Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.), Simpson, and Perry each scored to put the Hawks up 6-2. However Southern Maine responded in their at-bat of the inning once again. This time, the Huskies exploded for eight runs on eight hits in the bottom of the third to take a 12-6 lead that they held onto for the rest of the game.
Perry was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, with a run scored and two RBI. Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) added two hits and two RBI for RWU.
In the second game, the Hawks were hampered by fielding woes throughout the game, as six RWU errors led to six unearned runs in the game. The Huskies' main scoring opportunity came in the top of the third, putting five runs across the plate.
Despite the errors, the Hawks still remained in the game, after scoring a run in the third and four in the fourth, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Dahill. After five, the Hawks only trailed 6-5; yet a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh innings by Southern Maine stretched their lead out, pushing them to the win.
Simpson went 3-fo-3 at the dish with two RBI, while Dahill had two hits, three runs scored, and two RBI.
Roger Williams (5-5) will open up Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday afternoon with its 2009 home opener doubleheader against Nichols College at 2:00 p.m.
