Wentworth gets win and tie over Baseball

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team finished a doubleheader against Wentworth Institute of Technology with a loss and a tie, dropping the first game 2-1 in ten innings and closing the second in a 1-1 tie.

The first game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) reached on a double to right field and later scored on a throwing error at third base. The Hawks' one-run lead lasted until the Leopards tied the game in the sixth inning.

Connor Filsnik led the inning off with a walk, eventually making his way to third via a sacrifice and base hit. With runners on the corners, Mike Roberts put a base hit through the right side to score Filsnik and tie the game at one apiece.

It took four more innings before the next run would cross the plate, when Ben Danker got down a suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth to bring in the winning run.

Matt Vezina earned the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing one hit and one walk. Roberts finished with a pair of hits and an RBI.

Greg Sousa (Billerica, Mass.) took the loss after stranding the winning run on third. Porter had three hits in the game including a pair of doubles and a run scored.

Wentworth scored first in the second game, getting an RBI fielder's choice from Danker to give the Leopards an early 1-0 lead. Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.) evened the game for the Hawks in the top of the fourth, scoring on a fielding error at third base.

As the sunlight began to dim and the clouds continued to hover over the sky, neither team was able to break the stalemate after the game became official in the fifth inning. Dahill led off the top of the sixth with a grounder to short before the umpires called the game on impending darkness.

Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.), Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.), and Matt Berte (Marlborough, Mass.) each had a hit for the Hawks. Brian Hurld (South Boston, Mass.) went five innings, striking out five and allowing one run.

Jake McManus had a hit an a run in the game, with Brian Dannenhoffer gave up an unearned run in 5.1 innings of play.

Roger Williams (8-7-1, 3-2-1 TCCC) steps out of conference play Wednesday against Rhode Island College at 3:30 p.m., with Wentworth (14-5-1, 4-1-1 TCCC) plays UMass-Dartmouth Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
