Baseball drops non-conference tilt against Rhode Island College

BRISTOL, R.I.The Roger Williams University Baseball team dropped a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon against Rhode Island College, falling by a 5-7 score.

 

The Anchormen put one on the board in the first inning after Gary Levesque (East Providence, R.I.) tripled in Jordan Amorin (Swansea, Mass.) with two outs. #Justin Reyes# (Lincoln, R.I.) quickly erased the deficit in the bottom of the first for the Hawks with a two-out, two-RBI single to center, scoring Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) and Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.). Reyes would add another run for the Hawks in the following inning with an RBI double to put RWU up 3-1.

 

The Anchormen continued to chip away at the lead, getting a run in the fourth inning, then tying the game in the fifth on a home run to left field by Jared Rossi (Johnston, R.I.). Rhode Island College finally regained the lead in the sixth, with Josh Cardoso's (Dartmouth, Mass.) RBI double giving RIC a 4-3 advantage.

 

The Anchormen added two more in the eighth on a two-RBI double by Rossi to extend the lead to 6-3, yet the Hawks got both of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run by Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.). 

 

Rhode Island College added one insurance run in the top of the ninth, with Cardoso scoring on Bryan Colombero's (Skillman, N.J.) RBI single. RIC then put down the Hawks in order in the bottom half of the inning to get the win.

 

Rob Rushton (Freetown, Mass.) pitched eight innings in the victory, allowing five runs on eight hits. Eric Fama (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) tossed a scoreless ninth for the save. Cardoso was 2-for-5 with three runs scored while Colombero went 3-for-5 with two RBI an da run scored.

 

Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 5.1 innings of work. Reyes finished 2-for-4 with three RBI with Perry adding two hits and three runs scored.

 

Roger Williams (8-8-1) will take on Wheaton College Saturday at 3:30 p.m., while Rhode Island College (15-5) returns to Little East Conference play Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Western Connecticut State University.
