Roger Williams Strong Hurlers Down Crusaders Under Thursday Night Lights

QUINCY, Mass.  The Roger Williams University Baseball moved into a tie for second place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with a pair of wins against Eastern Nazarene College Thursday evening, defeating the Crusaders by the scores of 10-1 and 9-3.

Starting pitcher James Lydon (Calverton, NY) led the Hawks of Roger Williams past the Crusaders of Eastern Nazarene in game one of this The Commonwealth Coast Conference match up at Adams Field in Quincy, Mass.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard first as three Crusader errors kept their at bat alive.  It was Bill Lambert's (Hanover, Mass.) triple that scored two and he would soon come across the plate himself on the ensuing ground out.  By the time the third out came, the damage was done and six runs were scored, all unearned.

The Hawks tacked on another in the fourth as Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) homered down the left field line to lead off the inning, and then another in the fifth when Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) double and then scored from third on an error to make it 8-0.

Juan Rivera (Pelham, NH) and Matt Winders (Plymouth, MA) came in for relief in the 7th inning and the Hawks added two more to make the score 10-0.

The Crusaders' starting pitcher, Gregg Olson (San Diego, Calif.), falls to 3-2 while giving up 7 hits, 6 strikeouts, 1 walk and 1 earned run in six innings.

Lydon pitched a complete game allowing 3 hits, 5 strikeouts, 2 walks and 1 earned run.

PJ Gouthro (Walpole, Mass.) produced another quality performance for the Hawks in game two. They got on board first again in the bottom of the second when Porter homered over the left field fence for the one run lead.

The Crusaders answered in the bottom half of the inning as Nate Leaser (Solano Beach, Calif.) reached first on an error and wound up scoring on a wild pitch

The Hawks continued to put runners on base in the third, driving in two with an infield ground out and single to left field to gain a 3-1 edge.  In the bottom half of the inning, the Hawks defense continued to back up their pitcher well with strong defense as the hard hitting Crusaders could not find the right gaps.

The Crusaders fielding errors continued to haunt them as an overthrown ball to first advanced Ryan McCarthy (Middleton, Mass.) from first all the way home adding another run in the fourth and increase their lead to three, 4-1.

The Crusaders got one back in the fourth on Anthony Melendez's (Yonkers, NY) shot over the 371 foot sign in right center to make the score 4-2.

But in the top of the 7th the Hawks capitalized on yet another Crusader error and then Alex Perry (Glastonbury, CT) got to the Crusader pitcher with a bases loaded home run over the right field fence for a grand slam, and a significant 9-2 lead.

In the final half inning of the game Crusader Dave Dickerson (North Plainfield, NJ) doubled to the right field fence and then Danny Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) doubled to bring Dickerson home making the score 9-3 where the game finished.

Crusaders Jeffrey Hostos (Bronx, NY) started game two and lasted seven innings, allowing ten hits and eight runs while striking out six, walking three putting his record at 3-2.

Hawks southpaw Gouthro went six innings allowing four hits and 2 runs while striking out nine, walking one improving his record to 3-0.  The location on his breaking pitches was good all game and threw off the Crusaders.

Leading Eastern Nazarene tonight was Melendez who went 2 for 3 from the dish with a double and a solo home run, driving in two runs on the night.  Also for the Crusaders Rodriguez compiled three hits with a double, one RBI and one run scored.

Leading Roger Williams was shortstop Bolin who was 4 for 8 at the plate with one RBI, four runs scored and a home run.  Bolin was active all night in the field as he hustled for three putouts and five assists.
