Baseball falls to Curry in doubleheader

BRISTOL, R.I.- In the Men's Baseball final regular season home doubleheader, Saturday, the team suffered two losses at the hands of Curry College. Sophomore Tony Verrochi (Norwood, Mass.) gathered five hits on the day.

After a scoreless first inning in the opening game, Curry rallied for three runs in both the second and third. Curry hit back-to-back singles to start the second before RWU pitcher James Lydon (Calverton, N.Y.) surrendered back-to-back walks. RWU failed to turn a double play on the Colonials next two hits, allowing a run on each.

In the third inning Curry junior Rick Vail (Lynnfield, Mass.) hit a three-run home run to put the Colonials ahead, 6-0. Both teams scored one in the fifth before the Hawks put together a rally in the sixth, beginning with a home run by Verrochi. Junior Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) knocked in another run with an RBI single and senior Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) scored on a Jamie Dahill's (S. Boston, Mass.) sacrifice fly to left.

With the score 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, RWU put themselves in position for the late comeback, loading the bases with no outs. Curry senior Chris Judd (Peabody, Mass.) stayed strong on the mound, striking out one and forcing two pop-ups to end the game and earn his sixth win this season.

Curry continued its strong offense in the second game scoring two runs in the top of the first and tacked on another in the third. In the fifth inning the Colonials went ahead 5-0 before the Hawks got on the board when Lambert doubled in Verrochi.

RWU pulled to within two in the sixth when Porter hit a two-run homerun, but both teams remained scoreless in the seventh. Simon earned his fifth win on the season, while junior Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) suffered the loss.
