EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team completed its regular season Wednesday afternoon with an 8-2 win over Johnson & Wales University, concluding the careers of the senior class of Tim Atwood (Gorham, Maine), Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.), Brian Hurld (South Boston, Mass.), Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.), James Lydon (Calverton, N.Y.), Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.), and Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.).
Roger Williams took the early lead when a two-run single by Simpson put the Hawks up 2-0 in the top of the first. RWU added to the lead in the top of the second when Lambert led off with a double and later scored on a passed ball. An unearned run in the top of the third then gave the Hawks the 4-0 lead. Johnson & Wales got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when a sacrifice fly by sophomore Teddy Katz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) plated junior Waldis Garcia (Lowell, Mass.) to cut the lead to 4-1. The visiting Hawks added four insurance runs in the top of the ninth en route to the 8-2 victory.
The four senior position players, Lambert, Simpson, Dahill, and Atwood, combined for five hits, four runs scored, and three RBI. Junior Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI in the win for Roger Williams.
Lydon allowed one unearned run on five hits in six innings, earning his 22nd career win, best in school history.
The seven four-year players go down as the winningest senior class in the history of the program, having won 98 games in their career and breaking nine school records along the way.
Roger Williams concludes the season with a record of 21-20-1, while Johnson & Wales falls to 20-23.
