BABSON PARK, Mass. – Junior #D.J. Hunter# (Middletown, Conn.) scored the game's only goal in the 12th minute and junior Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) made 10 saves in net as the visiting Roger Williams University Hawks came away with a 1-0 victory over host Babson College in a non-conference men's soccer contest at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Tuesday afternoon. It was the season opener for both teams.
Roger Williams struck on the first shot attempt of the game, as senior back Justin Plourde (Concord, N.H.) hit a long ball over the Babson defense from deep in his own end. Hunter then corralled it and broke in all alone on sophomore goalie Ian Siekman (Bethel, Maine), blasting a breakaway shot inside the left post for the game's first goal at 11:44.
Babson would control play the rest of the way, outshooting the Hawks 9-4 over the remainder of the half and 13-3 in the second for a commanding 22-7 advantage for the game. However, Plate was outstanding in net for Roger Williams, making four saves in the opening period and six in the second stanza for 10 in the contest. The Beavers' first great opportunity came during a flurry in the 57th minute, but senior Dan Fogarty's (Brookeline, N.H.) rocket from the top of the box was saved by Plate and the follow-up shot by sophomore Salomon Guindi (Mexico City, Mexico) was blocked wide by a Hawks defender. Babson had another terrific chance when first-year Ayo Iwuagwu (Lagos, Nigeria) headed a point blank shot off a service from midfield with 1:45 remaining in the game, but Plate made a spectacular effort to tip it over the crossbar.
Playing in his first collegiate game in net, Siekman finished with four saves for Babson.
The Beavers return to action this Saturday when they host Wentworth at 1 p.m. as part of their own Babson Invitational Tournament. Roger Williams will also host its own tournament on Saturday, as the Hawks welcome Fitchburg State College at noon as part of the RWU/Turfer Classic.
