Connecticut College outlasts Volleyball, 3-1

BRISTOL, R.I.The Connecticut College Women's Volleyball team defeated their host Roger Williams University Tuesday finishing with a 3-1 score. Connecticut took the first game with a score of 25-18 just prior to the Hawks recovering to seize the second game 25-20.  In game three, the Camels reversed the Hawks previous game score and won 25-20. The last game was nabbed 25-19 after a strong fight by both teams.

 

Twenty-six total ties were accomplished throughout the match, 11 of which were in the first game. Roger Williams and Connecticut went point for point back and forth from the score of 7-7 to 17-17 where Connecticut then stole the lead en route to the win.

 

The second game saw the Hawk jump out to a 4-0 lead before the Camels eventually tied at five. The game played out just as closely as the previous set, with eight ties and two lead changes. The last lead change came from a Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) kill to put RWU up 21-20, sparking a 5-0 run to close out the game.

 

The Hawks began the game, scoring four of the first six points before a 10-3 Camel run put RWU in a 7-12 deficit that the team could not overcome.  The final game saw Connecticut College lead wire-to-wire, with Amy Newman registering the match-ending kill.

 

Newman dominated in kills with a match high of 22, in addition to her 12 digs and four service aces, also team highs. Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.) also sparked the Camel offense, handing out 44 assists on Connecticut College's 75 total points. Chelsea Manning (Cockeysville, Md.) killed nine of her 14 attempts with two errors, leaving her with a .500 hitting percentage.

 

Dolan and Brittney Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) each fronted the Hawks seven kills thanks to help of the 24 assists by #Emily Lebowitz# (Coventry, Conn.) 24 assists. Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) and Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) combined for nearly half of the Hawks' 53 digs with 13 apiece.

 

Roger Williams (5-5) will next be playing a tri-match in Springfield, Massachusetts against Western New England College at 11:00 a.m. and Endicott College at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday September 19. Connecticut (4-1) is competing against Bowdoin College at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts Friday September 19 at 8:00 p.m.
