BRISTOL, R.I.- The RWU Hawks Volleyball Team earned a 3-0 win over Endicott College Saturday afternoon, bouncing back from a 3-1 loss to host Western New England College earlier in the day. Endicott went on to defeat WNEC, 3-2, leaving all three teams at 1-1 in conference play.
In the day's first match, attack errors and service woes hampered the Hawks' efforts, helping WNEC to the win by the scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-27, 25-20. RWU totaled 10 attack errors in the first set alone and also finished the match with nine service errors. Freshman Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) was the only Hawk with double digit kills, totaling 10 in four sets. The Golden Bears were led by senior outside hitter Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, Mass.) with 12 kills.
Thirty minutes later RWU faced three-time defending TCCC champion Endicott and rolled to the 3-0 victory with scores of 25-20, 25-23, 26-24. Serving was again an issue as the team totaled 13 errors in the three sets. Nevertheless, RWU's balanced offense, including four players with seven kills, helped the team post a .192 hitting percentage in the win. Endicott was led by senior Steph Wiese (Higganum, Conn.) with 10 kills.
The third match of the day saw Endicott jump out to a two-set lead before WNEC rallied to send the match into a fifth and deciding set. An 8-0 run helped the Gulls to the 15-7 win.
The three teams all departed with a 1-1 conference record on this TCCC opening weekend. RWU returns to non-conference play Tuesday as it travels to Suffolk for a 7 p.m. match. The Gulls travel to Wesleyan College Tuesday, while WNEC stays within the conference to face Anna Maria College.
