2009 RWU Golf Classic a Success

REHOBOTH, Mass. – On Monday the annual RWU Golf Classic was held under beautiful sunny skies at the Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, Mass.  The annual event is the largest fundraiser for the Athletics Department, and the funds are used to support student athletes, teams, equipment, services and facilities in the Athletics Department.  The event saw 22 different teams of four compete, with competitions for the longest drive and closest to the pin on the 1st and 17th holes.

The Athletics department is committed to the philosophy that competition in athletics helps students develop leadership skills, integrity, courage, and the ability to work with others towards a common goal.  The funds generated from this tournament are a major source of the revenues needed to make it possible to support the 20 varsity sports sponsored by RWU, and the intramurals and intercollegiate programs that make up the University's Athletics Department.

The longest drive was held on the 1st hole and was separated into two divisions, men and women.  For the Women, Jackie Falla had the longest tee shot and Otis Brown's mammoth tee shot was the longest for the men.  The 17th hole was the site for the closest to the pin challenge.  The par three proved to be quite a challenge with tricky winds that deceived a number of players.  Jim Wood landed his ball four feet, seven inches from the hole to win it for the men, and Jackie Falla was the winner for the women at 55 feet.

The third place team consisting of Phil Bogucki, Kevin Phipps, Karl Johnson, and Jeff Manning turned in a score of 69.  Just edging them out for second was the team of Skip Schiappa, Bob Lavoie, Tony Amaral and Donnie Fitting with a score of 68.  The first place team and winners of the 2009 RWU Golf Classic turned in a score of 65 and was made up of Jim Moniz, Ted Almon, Mike Dumar, and Larry Wiedenhofer.

Also at the event were several auctions both live and silent for things such as Red Sox and Celtics Tickets, Gift cards and weekend stays at resorts.  Also there was a raffle for a set of irons, and a 50-50 raffle which were able to generate additional funds.  Overall the tournament was a success.

The RWU Athletics department would like to thank all of its participants and sponsors that came out on Monday to show their support for RWU, as well as the Crestwood Country Club for their efforts in making the tournament possible.  The Athletics Department appreciates all of the support and hopes that next year's event is as successful as this year's.
