Men's Soccer wins home opener, advances to Turfer Classic championship

BRISTOL, R.I. - Freshmen Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.), Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.), and Michael Quintanilla (Walpole, Mass.) each scored their first collegiate goals Saturday helping the Roger Williams Men's Soccer team shutout Fitchburg State College Falcons (1-1-0) 4-0 in the 2009 Fifth Annual Turfer Athletic Classic Tournament.

Senior Justin Plourde (Concord, N.H.) assisted Kissane with a long pass just outside the box, racking the first and only goal of the first half. Despite the one-goal lead, the Falcons continued to press the Hawks on both sides of the ball. Hawks' Head Coach Jim Cook felt the Falcons “played very well even when the game was one nothing for quite some time.”

The Hawks' second goal came off of a one-timer by junior Kevin Hand (Wilton, Conn.), knocking in a corner kick by Macdonald on the fly. Coach Cook felt that Hand's goal was the turning point in the game.

“That's when I felt we were going to win,” noted Head Coach Cook. “After the second goal they knew it would be tough to come back and score three.”

Macdonald had a helpful assist by junior Jared Falconer (Ludlow, Mass.) to beat the keeper after a pass on the fly to sink another goal. With 23 seconds left in the game, Quintanilla finished strong, re-bounding the ball between two defenders in the box, scoring the final goal of the game.

Falcons' goalie Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn.) led with four saves against Roger Williams' total eight attempted shots on goal. Junior keeper Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) made two great saves for his second straight shutout, one of which was a close shot by Jonathan Diaz-Atto (Fitchburg, Mass.) that would have bent just inside the post.

Roger Williams (2-0-0) hits the field again tomorrow in the championship game at 1:30 p.m.. The Hawks will play Plymouth State College (1-0-0) who defeated Ithaca College (0-1-0) in the second game of the day. Fitchburg State and Ithaca precedes in the consolation game at 11:00 a.m.
