Volleyball wins first match of 2009 in split at Springfield Invite

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team earned its first win of the season in a split on the second day of the Springfield College Invitational, defeating Lasell College 3-0 after falling to Springfield 3-1.

 

The Hawks cruised to their win over Lasell in straight sets, winning the first game 25-13. In the second game, the Lasers put up a stronger fight but still fell 23-25 to the Hawks. RWU put the match away in the third game with a 25-15 victory.

 

Senior Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) led in the game with nine kills, while freshman Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) had 28 assists and 12 digs. Fellow freshman Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) added 11 digs with three services aces.

 

Prior to the Hawks' win, the team took on Springfield College in the first match of the day. The Hawks dropped the first two games by scores of 21-25 and 19-25 before coming back in the third with a 25-15 win. Yet the Hawks were unable to maintain the momentum at the Pride ended the match by taking the fourth set 25-13.

 

Dion led the team with 12 kills, while sophomore Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) and senior #Kristina Dolan# (Glenmont, N.Y.) contributed ten kills apiece. Lebowitz dished out 39 assists while Loche dug out 13 balls.

 

Roger Williams (1-4) will host Emmanuel College Tuesday evening, with the first serve to begin at 7:00 p.m.
