BRISTOL, R.I. – Western New England College earned its fifth straight win with a 2-1 victory over the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team Tuesday afternoon to increase its lead to five points in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.
The Golden Bears nearly grabbed an early lead less than three minutes into the game when a header by Shawn Fitzpatrick (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) off of a corner kick bounced off the cross bar. WNEC would eventually grab the first goal of the game at the 17:26 mark. Fitzpatrick corralled a loose ball in the box off of a corner, heading the shot in for the Golden Bears' first score of the game.
The 1-0 advantage for Western New England held up until the closing minutes of the first half when Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.) put in the equalizer with only 1:48 to play in the period. A free kick for the Hawks deflected off of a Western New England defender and eventually found its way to the foot of Webson, who then fired a shot over the WNEC keeper for the score.
The second half saw both teams pick up the intensity on both ends of the pitch. The game appeared as if it was headed for an extra session before Ryan Williams (Brewster, N.Y.) sent in the eventual game winner in the 79th minute, putting one in from just outside the center of the box.
After the goal, the Hawks made one last rally in the final minutes of the game, putting on four shots at the WNEC defense, but the Golden Bears held on for the victory.
Sean Healey (Portland, Conn.) picked up the win for Western New England, making four stops in the game, while Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) stopped three shots in the loss.
