Season-high seven goals put Men’s Soccer past Eastern Nazarene

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Goalmouth action was ever present as the Roger Williams Men's Soccer team compiled a massive 44 shots en route to defeating Eastern Nazarene College 7-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Leading just 2-0 at the half, the Hawks (6-8-3, 6-3-3 TCCC) rattled off four unanswered second half goals to see them past the Lions, who drop to 5-11-0, 3-9-0 in TCCC play.

Right from the opening kick-off, the Hawks set a scintillating tempo that would epitomize their play on the day. Just 38 seconds in, Eastern Nazarene goalkeeper Andrew Trice (Quincy, Mass.) was forced to snag the ball from the feet of RWU's Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) after the RWU midfielder had broken in on goal. Moments later, Jared Falconer (Ludlow, Mass.) forced a diving stop from Trice, and Bradley MacDonald (Topsfield, Mass.) sent a shot that clattered against the left post.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 18th minute. Falconer found himself alone in space with only Trice to beat. He took two steps before firing a chip shot over the Lions goalkeeper and into the net to give the Hawks the upper hand.

Though there were many good efforts by RWU on goal following the opening tally, it would be 16 minutes later until the next goal arrived. Jeff MacDonald (Auburn, Mass.), standing on the left side of the Lions' penalty box, got his foot to a bouncing ball and sent a strong shot past Trice and into the far side-netting. That would be the last score of the half, but the Hawks would go into the break with the two-goal advantage.

Barely two minutes into the second half, Roger Williams scored for a third time. Isleib fed freshman Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) on the right side of the penalty area, who made no mistake with the finish, sending a low shot to the far corner from eight yards to make it 3-0.

Eastern Nazarene would make things interesting, though, earning a penalty kick with 27:21 left after a hand-ball by a Hawk defender in the box. Up stepped Josh Kaplan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) to take the kick. Though RWU goalkeeper Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) was able to get a hand to Kaplan's shot, he couldn't keep it out, as the ball trickled in for the Lions' first score of the day.

Just five minutes later, however, Jeff MacDonald would grab another goal in giving the Hawks a 4-1 lead. Taking a pass from defender Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.), MacDonald slotted the ball into the far corner for his second tally of the day.

Despite a commanding 4-1 advantage, Roger Williams wasn't finished scoring. With 13:49 left, Bradley MacDonald poked the ball home from close range to make it 5-1. Less than three minutes later, Isleib sent a bullet of a header past Trice for a five-goal Hawk advantage. Finally, with 32 seconds remaining, Michael Friedman (Scarsdale, N.Y.) capped the scoring in style, curling a corner kick directly into the net from the left flank. The clock ran out and Roger Williams came off the field as 7-1 winners, much to the delight of the Homecoming crowd.

Plate stopped two shots before making way to freshman Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) in earning the win, while Trice saved nine efforts in the loss.

Roger Williams closes the regular season at home against Regis College on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m., while Eastern Nazarene is at home against the University of New England on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
