Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU Women's Volleyball Team secured The Commonwealth Coast Conference regular season championship Saturday earning a 3-0 victory over both Anna Maria College and Gordon College to finish with a perfect 10-0 TCCC record. RWU enters the TCCC Post-Season Tournament 26-5 overall and will host each match beginning Tuesday as the top seed.
Senior Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) gathered eight blocks on the day to set the new RWU all-time record for most blocks in a career. She tallied three in the first match against Anna Maria College and five against Gordon.
RWU began the day sweeping the Amcats 25-13, 25-7, 25-9. The Hawks gathered 40 kills on 83 swings with the help of 30 assists from freshman setter Sarah DeVries (Dover Plains, N.Y.). Dion led all players with nine kills on 17 swings along with three blocks.
Anna Maria's Alicia Bonneau and Melissa Stedman led all players with seven digs each in three sets. Fabienne Jules posted two of Anna Maria's three service aces, while Hawks' sophomore Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) led all players with three.
In the second match of the day, RWU defeated Gordon 25-15, 25-9, 25-13. The team again posted 40 kills, this time on 84 swings with 30 assists coming from sophomore setter Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.). Dion again led all players with 12 kills on 21 swings. Teammates Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) and Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) each gathered eight.
RWU junior Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) led all players with three service aces while picking up seven digs. Teammate Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) tied Gordon's Keri Hustus with the match-high nine digs.
RWU hosts its quarterfinal contest Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the eighth seed, Regis College.
