Box Score
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team picked up its second win in as many nights with a 68-46 win over Wheaton College Tuesday evening.
The win for RWU gives the Hawks the first win in the program's history over the Lyons, with RWU coming into the game 0-4 in the series.
The contest opened with a three-pointer by Wheaton's Gabby Barbera (Ridgewood, N.J.), followed by a layup by Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) for RWU. Those two baskets would be indicative of the play over the first half of play. Three lead changes and thee ties marked the first 12 minutes of the period.
Gabby DePalo (Rumson, N.J.) dropped in a layup to put Wheaton up 7-6, but that would be the Lyons' last lead of the game as Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) answered with a layup of her own. Later in the half, Barbera knocked down a jumper to knot the score at 15 apiece, but Lanieri came back with another bucket to the Hawks back on top by two with 6:31 to play in the half. That basket began an 18-3 Hawk run to close out the half and go into the break with a commanding 15-point lead.
Though Wheaton fared better from the field in the second half, shooting 39.3 percent in the period compared to 25.9 percent in the first 20 minutes, strong Hawk defensive pressure kept the Lyons from making a run back into the game. Wheaton surrendered 18 points on 12 turnovers in the period, while the Hawks hit nearly half of their shots, shooting 15-of-31 (.484) from the floor. Roger Williams maintained its double-digit lead throughout the period en route to its first 2-0 start to a season since 1995.
Lanieri led the way with a solid performance, finishing with a career-high in points (27) and blocks (5). Weekes nearly notched a triple-double for the Hawks, going for eight points, eight assists, and 11 rebounds. Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) added six points and seven boards off the bench.
DePalo and Jeana Trimboll (Norwalk, Conn.) each scored seven points for the Lyons, with DePalo also adding seven rebounds. Vanessa Campbell (Manchester, N.H.) notched six points and five boards off the bench, with Barbera finishing with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.
Roger Williams (2-0) has the rest of the week off, and will play in-state TCCC rival Salve Regina University November 23 at 6:00 p.m. in a non-conference game. Wheaton (0-1) hosts Rivier College Friday in its annual Wheaton Tip-Off Tournament.
