Women’s Volleyball claims second straight TCCC Championship

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team clinched its second consecutive berth to the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-16, 25-15) over Endicott College Saturday afternoon to win The Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament for the second year in a row.

The Hawks won all three playoff matches by identical 3-0 scores and clinched the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The 29 wins for RWU marks the most in the team's history since 1984 when the Hawks won a school-record 30 matches on the year.

Roger Williams grabbed a quick 2-0 lead to open the match before a 9-2 Gull run put Endicott on top 9-4. The Gulls maintained a lead through most of the first half of the game before RWU clawed its way back into the match, eventually tying the set at 11. A Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) kill began a 9-1 run for RWU to take a 20-12 lead. Yet the eight-point advantage soon evaporated, as Endicott pulled to within two on the Hawks' game point. Yet Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) ended the rally with a kill to give RWU the three-point opening set win.

Back-to-back kills by Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and Twarog opened the second game for Roger Williams, giving the Hawks a lead they would not give up. Endicott tied the second set on three separate occasions, with the last being at 9-9. From there, the Hawks' Torpey earned a kill to put RWU up 10-9 and begin an 11-5 run. Roger Williams would ultimately take a 2-0 lead on an assisted block by Natasha Sopchak (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) and Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.).

The third set began with both teams trading points back and forth to open the game, culminating in a 9-9 tie. A solo block by Twarog sparked a 5-0 Hawk run prior to an RWU service error. From there, the Hawks would run off a 7-1 rally to take a commanding 21-11 lead in the set, leading to a Gull timeout. Endicott got up to 15 points before a service ace by Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) clinched the match for RWU and the conference title.

Twarog led the Hawks with 14 kills on the day, while Dion added nine kills, moving into second place all-time in Roger Williams history in kills with 1,083.  Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) contributed 31 assists and nine digs, with Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) finishing with a game-high 13 digs. Luczynski added eight kills and four blocks in the match.

Roger Williams (29-5) finds out its First Round opponent for the NCAA Tournament on Monday, November 8, while Endicott concludes its regular season with a record of 22-15.
