ORLANDO. Fla. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team opened up the 2010 season win a thrilling 9-8 over Babson College Saturday afternoon in their first game of their Spring Break trip at the 2010 RussMatt Baseball Invitational.
The Hawks banged out 15 hits in the win, including the game-winning hit by sophomore Chris Comeau (Southbury, Conn.), who knocked in senior co-captain Ryan MacCarthy (Middleton, Mass.) with a walkoff double. MacCarthy scored from first base with one out on Comeau's double to give RWU the win.
Sophomore Sam Podbelski (East Greenwich, R.I.) went seven innings, giving up seven hits and four runs (three earned) with five strikeouts. Senior Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.) came on in the ninth with runners at first and third and one out, stranding both runners to earn the win.
MacCarthy was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with a double, two runs, and an RBI while starting at third. Comeau went 3-for-5 with a pair of two-baggers, a run, and two RBI. Sophomore Tim Georgen (Bristol, R.I.) had a 2-for-3 performance at the dish with two walks, two runs, and an RBI. Junior Stephen McKernan (Grafton, Mass.) got the start behind the plate and went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Roger Williams (1-0) will be back on the field tomorrow to take on Amherst College.
