Bowdoin downs Baseball in doubleheader

LEESBURG, Fla. - The Roger Williams University Baseball team dropped its seventh consecutive game in a doubleheader sweep to Bowdoin College Friday afternoon, falling 11-7 and 4-1.

In the first game, Matt Ruane (Belmont, Mass.) led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to begin a four-run inning for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin added one more run in the fourth before the Hawks got on the board in the fifth. Sophomore Tim Georgen (Bristol, Conn.) doubled in classmate Eric Cabral (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Matt Swensen (Charlton, Mass.) to pull within three.

In the bottom half of the inning, Bowdoin put up five runs on the board to go up 10-2, yet the Hawks responded with five runs of their own in the top of the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate in the inning. That would be as close as RWU would get, as the Polar Bears added one more run before securing the win.

Senior Ryan Willette (Middleton, Mass.) took the loss, allowing seven runs in four innings. Swensen, Cabral, and senior captains Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) and Ryan MacCarthy (Middleton, Mass.) each went 2-for-4 in the game.

The second game saw both teams locked into a pitcher's duel between RWU junior PJ Gouthro (Walpole, Mass.) and Bowdoin freshman Oliver Van Zant (Westport, Conn.). The two held their opponent scoreless through four innings, allowing only four hits between them.

Bowdoin would be the first to score in the game, getting an RBI single by junior Adam Marquit (New York, N.Y.) and a two-RBI double by senior Reid Auger (Billerica, Mass.) in the fifth. An RBI single by junior Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) in the bottom half of the inning cut the deficit to one, but Bowdoin would get that run back in the following inning towards the win.

Gouthro suffered the loss, allowing four runs in six innings. Porter went 1-for-3 with an RBI, with Georgen scoring the lone run for RWU.

Roger Williams (1-7) concludes its Spring Break trip Saturday against Trinity College.
