MILTON, Mass. – Curry College and Roger Williams split a doubleheader in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) baseball action Thursday afternoon in Milton. The visiting Hawks captured the opener, 8-4, while the Colonels took the nightcap, 15-2, in a game shortened to 5 ½ innings due to darkness. Curry's record now stands at 22-11 overall and 15-5 in TCCC play. Roger Williams is now 10-22 overall and 7-13 in league play.
Roger Williams broke on top quickly in the opener, plating a first-inning run on an infield error, and another on a single by freshman Rob Zarthar (Dedham, Mass.) that brought home senior Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.). The Hawks scored three more times in the top of the second after Bolin homered to left field.
The Colonels dented the scoreboard with a three-run third inning, cutting the deficit to 5-3. With two outs, seniors Tony Luciani (Weymouth, Mass.) and Tim Sweeney (Walpole, Mass.) picked up a couple of singles. Senior Rick Vail (Lynnfield, Mass.) and sophomore Brian Morante (Westwood, Mass.) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and bring Luciani home. Junior Sean Jackman (Stoughton, Mass.) then plated two more runs with an infield base hit.
Roger Williams added two more runs in the fourth after junior Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) singled to left field. Curry responded by scoring a run in the bottom of the inning after Luciani hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home senior Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, Mass.). The Hawks added one more run in the seventh inning on a solo home run by Porter and held the Colonels scoreless in the bottom half of the frame.
Freshman Josh Orosz (Fairfield, Conn.) improved to 2-3, allowing seven hits and striking out three over five innings of work. Senior Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.) notched his fourth save of the season, shutting down Curry over the final 1 1/3 innings. Senior James Page (Weymouth, Mass.) took the loss, surrendering five earned runs and two walks over 1 2/3 innings. His record fell to 3-3.
In the second game, the Colonels exploded for 15 runs on 14 hits. They scored three runs in the first on a two-RBI double by Luciani and an RBI single by Morante, then added three more in the second, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of junior Brad Hawn (Chino Hills, Calif.).
The hosts continued the offensive onslaught in the third, scoring eight more times including a three-run home run by Luciani and a two-run shot by Morante.
Sophomore Miles Galvin (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) got the win, improving to 3-3 on the season, after giving up four hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings of work. Sophomore Sean Scanlon (Lebanon, Conn.) absorbed the loss to fall to 0-7 on the season. He surrendered seven hits, five walks and 10 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
Both teams resume play on April 24. Curry plays in a home doubleheader against Nichols at noon while Roger Williams hosts Eastern Nazarene in a twin bill starting at 11:00 a.m.
