Volleyball begins year with win over Eastern Conn.

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team kicked off the 2010 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Wednesday evening.

 

The Hawks dropped the first set 22-25, but came back to sweep the next three sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-15.

 

Senior Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) had an efficient night at the net, hitting .500 with 12 kills on 20 attempts with only two errors. The Hawks ran a well-ballanced offense with both outside hitters, sophomore Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and junior Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) notching 10 kills, while freshman Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) debuted in the middle with ten kills as well.

 

Sophomore Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) handed out 39 assists, with senior Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) digging out 20 balls.

 

Kristianna Ibsen led the Warriors with eight kills, with Katie Wilson chipping in with six kills and four blocks. Ashley Markley added 18 assists and eight digs.

 

Roger Williams (1-0) begins the Springfield College invitational on Friday with a 5:00 p.m. match against Lasell College.
