WENHAM, Mass. - Gordon and Roger Williams tied at 1-1 in a hotly contested conference matchup. The draw moves the Gordon men's soccer team to 2-3-1 on the season, while Roger Williams stands at 1-5-1. Both teams are 1-0-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.
The Fighting Scots nearly broke through in the 3rd minute of the game when Blake Berkey's shot was stopped by a fantastic save from Hawks' goalkeeper Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.).
Gordon fired a flurry of shots in the first 15 minutes, but it was the Hawks who scored first. Daniel Caruso split the Scots' defense and took a great assist from Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.), beating Ryan Coil in the 19th minute. The score remained 1-0 for most of the rest of the half, until Gordon freshman Andrew Vandervoort struck with 1:06 to play in the first half. Vandervoort took a free ball from Alex Sosler and burst through the Hawks defense, beating Plate with a shot to the far right post.
With a 1-1 score at the break, both teams pushed hard for the decisive goal. The Hawks' Brian Swindell (Milford, Mass.)nearly scored in the 53rd minute when he got behind the Gordon defense and fired a shot that was just wide of the right post. In the 61st minute, Plate came up huge again as he made a leaping deflection of a head ball from Gordon sophomore Matt Lane.
Ryan Coil (7 saves) made two of his best saves midway through the second half with a pair of diving stops to foil the Hawks. Senior forward Matt Horth had a free kick from just outside the circle, but it deflected wide off a Hawks defender.
After 90 minutes of play the game headed into overtime. Both teams continued to play tight defense and the extra session did not feature as many scoring opportunities as the second half.
Gordon finished with a 20-16 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Plate posted 11 saves for Roger Williams.
Gordon will continue conference play when they host Eastern Nazarene at 7PM Wednesday. Roger Williams will be home to Salve Regina at 4PM on Tuesday.
