Volleyball rolls to win over Bridgewater State

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team earned another non-conference win Tuesday evening, defeating Bridgewater State University in three games by the scores 25-17, 25-22, 25-23.

The visiting Bears came out and scored the first two points of the match, rolling their way towards a 12-6 lead. Yet Roger Williams mounted a run of its own, scoring five straight points as part of a 9-2 run to take the lead. Bridgewater State pulled to within four to make it a 21-14 game, but the Hawks closed out with four straight points including back-to-back service aces by Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) to end the first set and put RWU up 1-0.

In the second game, Roger Williams jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead, eventually expanding it to five to make it a 10-5 game in favor of the Hawks. The Bears would rally back, capping a 6-2 with a block by Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) and Natalie Cohen (Marstons, Mills, Mass.) to bring Bridgewater State within one. Yet that would be as close as the Bears would get, as Roger Williams maintained at least a two-point cushion over the remainder of the game, with Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) spiking a kill for the game point.

In the third game, Bridgewater State grabbed an early four-point lead, with Kristina Campbell spiking a dig attempt at the net to put the Bears on top 8-4. Bridgewater State held the lead for most of the early part of the match, with the Bears' lead hovering around a two-point margin. Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) briefly tied the game at 13 with a service ace before Bridgewater State ran off three straight points. The Hawks continued to battle, with a Dion kill and a swing into the net by the Bears breaking an 18-all tie and putting RWU in the lead for good. Twarog ended a late Bear rally with a kill to give Roger Williams the two-point win and the match.

Dion and Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) each led RWU with nine kills each, while Lebowitz handed out 32 assists to go along with four of RWU's 11 service aces. Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) had nine digs for the Hawks, with Twarog, Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.), and Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) each adding six digs.

DePina finished the match with eight kills for Bridgewater State, with teammate Tayler Beck (Marion, Mass.) adding seven. Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) dished out 20 assists, while Julie Clerc (Acushnet, Mass.) finished with 15 digs.

Roger Williams (11-2) hosts Clark University on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State (4-4) takes on Newbury College Monday at 6:00 p.m.
