Men’s Soccer earns vital win Over Colby-Sawyer

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer snapped a four-game winless streak with a crucial TCCC win over Colby-Sawyer College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks gave the Chargers their first conference loss of the season and first set back in four games.

Bradley MacDonald (Topsfield, Mass.) scored in the 25th minute for the only goal of the game to give the Hawks the win. Josh Boyce (Peabody, Mass.) had the assist.

The first half was the epitome of a true “midfield battle,” as most of the play was in the center of the pitch with neither team creating many chances. However, when Boyce's effort on net was deflected, MacDonald was there to pounce and guide the ball past the Chargers' goalkeeper Will Berry (Berlin, Vt.) and into the goal to give RWU the lead 20:10 into the first half.

Following halftime, the game started to open up a bit more, as both teams got into a rhythm. After the Hawks earned three corner kicks in the space of three minutes, the Chargers displayed their ability on the counter-attack, as Cooper McNealus (Saxtons River, Vermont) sent an effort on net with 32:23 remaining that RWU goalie Peter Plate (Commack, N.Y.) dove to stop. Two minutes later, Plate was again called into action, diving to grab a ball with a Colby-Sawyer player bearing down. With 25:53 left in regulation, Derek Veilleux (Winslow, Maine) waltzed his way past two defenders and into the box, but his shot hit the right side-netting.

After weathering some pressure from the Chargers, Roger Williams had a few great chances to extend their lead. First, Jared Falconer (Ludlow, Mass.) sent a left-footed effort just wide of Berry's left-hand post with 10:16 to go. Next, Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.) sent an effort just wide with 5:19 remaining. Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) was the next Hawk to try his luck, sending a dipping effort just over the bar with 4:37 left. From there on, the Hawks played tight at the back, running out the clock for the 1-0 win.

“We knew we had to win this,” said Coach Jim Cook. “They were 3-0 in the Conference, and we knew we had to get the win. The performance was good; the shutout was just icing on the cake. Hopefully, this sets us forward for our games down the road.”

Plate made 14 saves in earning the win, while Berry stopped nine shots for his team in the setback.

Roger Williams (2-6-1, 2-1-1 TCCC) are next up at Anna Maria College on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m, while Colby-Saywer (3-4-0, 3-1-0 TCCC) host Middlebury College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
