Women's Basketball nets close win over UMass-Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball slipped past the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Thursday evening, winning 60-59 in the team's non-conference doubleheader at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The Corsairs turned a four-point deficit into a four point lead at 57-53 with just a tick over two minutes left in the game on a layup by freshman guard Megan Sheehan (Carver, Mass.) and back to back three pointers from the wing by junior guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, Mass.) and Sheehan. Corsair freshman forward Mykaliah Best (Cambridge, Mass.) would answer a Hawks jumper by sophomore guard Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) with a pair of free throws to keep the lead at 59-55 with 1:19 to play.

A layup by Hawks sophomore forward Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) cut the lead to two and Kilzi would give the Hawks the lead for good with twelve seconds to play on an old-fashioned three point play as she was fouled making a lay-up.  Houtman had a chance to win it for the Corsairs but her well-contested jumper came up short as time expired.

Roger Williams had three players in double figures with Kilzi pouring in 20 points, Lanieri adding 14 and freshman guard Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) chipping in with a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.

Houtman, who played all but two minutes, led the Corsairs with a game-high 31 points on 11 of 25 shooting including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc.  However, the rest of the Corsairs shot a combined 9 of 46.

Joining Houtman in double figures was Sheehan with 10 points.  Freshman forward Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) led the way on the boards for the Corsairs with a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Corsairs were out-rebounded by the Hawks, 53-38 but a tenacious defense forced Roger Williams into 22 turnovers compared to just 8 for UMD.

The Corsairs fell to 3-11 with the loss, while the Hawks improved to 9-3 with the victory. UMass-Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Keene State in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday. Roger Williams will visit Wentworth Saturday.
