Men’s Soccer upset by UMass-Dartmouth

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The #21st nationally-ranked Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2011 season, dropping a 4-5 decision Tuesday evening to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

The Hawks, entering the day ranked third in New England, fall to 9-1-2 on  the year, while UMass-Dartmouth improves to 6-3-2.

The Corsairs scored two early goals in the first half by Nick Gontijo (Hudson, Mass.) and Jonathan Acosta (New Bedford, Mass.) before the Hawks would come back to tie the game on a pair of goals by Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine).

In the second half, Roger Williams jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) scoring two goals in the period. The Hawks looked poised for the win, but a converted penalty kick by Acosta brought UMass-Dartmouth within one. The Corsairs would complete the comeback in the final two minutes of the game with Gontijo's second score of the game to send the contest into overtime.

In the extra periods, UMass-Dartmouth snatched the victory in the final minutes of the second overtime on a score by Gontijo with under two minutes to play to give the Hawks the loss.

Mike Phelan (Carver, Mass.) earned his fourth win on the year for the Corsairs, making four stops in the game. Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) made ten saves in the game for Roger Williams.

Roger Williams steps back into conference play Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. game against Endicott, while UMass-Darmouth hosts UMass-Boston on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
