PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team earned its second straight win to start the 2011-12 season with a 65-49 decision against intra-state rival Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.
Freshman Amanda Keane (Wilmington, Mass.) led the way for Roger Williams, tallying 13 points and three assists while senior Ryan Weekes (Worcester, Mass.) added a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Sophomore Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) and junior Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) were also in double figures in scoring ten points apiece in the win for the Hawks.
Sophomore Jenna Juron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) led the way for Johnson & Wales with 16 points and two rebounds while senior Katurah Andrews (Hartford, Conn.) narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds in the setback for the Wildcats.
The two teams traded baskets early with Johnson & Wales holding a 13-9 advantage after a three pointer by Kenney with 14:19 left in the first half. Roger Williams then responded with an 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by junior Abby Marsh (Manchester, Vt.) with 12:32 left in the half. The visiting Hawks then built on their lead and took their first double-figure advantage of the game when a free throw by Marsh with 0:38 left gave them the ten point lead. RWU took the 35-25 lead into the locker room at halftime after holding JWU to just 24.2% shooting from the field while forcing 12 turnovers.
The Hawks extended their lead in the second half and took their largest lead of the game, 63-42 on a traditional three-point play by Weekes with just under five minutes remaining. Roger Williams would then hold on for the 65-49 victory.
With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 1-2 for the year while Roger Williams improves to 2-0 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, November 29th when they travel to Rhode Island College for a non-conference contest at 5:30 p.m. Roger Williams takes on Suffolk University next Monday at 7:00 p.m.
